ANNOUNCING OUR 2022 HALLOWEEN SHIRT!
Presenting our 10th Annual Halloween T-Shirt!

Our artist for 2022 is Daryl Earnest. Daryl describes himself thusly: "I’m just a huge horror fan who loves to draw and who’s been lucky enough to have my stuff used from time to time." We're the lucky ones this time, Daryl!

As always, our silkscreen printer is the fabulous Scurvy Ink, run by Sam McCanna. Sam is an artist with inks! These shirts will be hand-silkscreened on high-quality black tees. We expect to have them in early October.

Since you're on our mailing list, you'll be among the first to know when the shirts officially go on sale. These always sell out fast, so when you get that e-mail don't wait to order or come into the store to grab your exclusive 2022 shirt. Sorry, we're not taking pre-sale orders.

WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?
Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
Lionel Wendt's Ceylon by Lionel Wendt, L. C. Geyzel (introduction) and Bernard G. Thornley (technical note). Hardback in jacket published by Lincolns-Prager in 1950. Condition is good in good jacket: jacket is sunned and foxed, some edge wear with several 1-inch chips along upper edge; foxing throughout book, binding is cracking near front, previous owner's inscription on half-title page, book has a slight smoky smell. $450

TALKING ABOUT...
Here's a new blog post about Iliad's Collectibles section, and another one on Ten Sections You Might Not Know About.

Customer Michael J. (thanks, Michael!) alerted us to a lovely mention of us in Matthew Specktor's Always Crashing in the Same Car:

"Iliad is the quintessential used shop: whirring fans, torpid cats - that silence - punctuated by throat-clearings, coughs, the occasional squeak of a footstep - through which readers and collectors stalk their prey. This silence has largely faded from Los Angeles: you don't hear it in Barnes & Noble, or at Book Soup, at Skylight Books or Eso Won, but now as then you can drive out to the intersection of Chandler Boulevard and Cahuenga and enter archival time, that yellow-lit, musty-smelling corridor that is the closest thing to intimacy you can find in the commercial arena."

What a wonderful description!
HELLO, NEW READER!
Iliad customer Lauren sent us this photo of her adorable daughter Leighton with this note: "Instilling a love of books in her from a super early age has been very important to me!" We couldn't agree more, and thanks for such a cute pic, Lauren!
ZEUS AND APOLLO
Zeus and Apollo chillaxin' on some nice cool glass.
Employee Eric caught Apollo approving of what customer Amanda is reading...
