View this email in your browser
Hi Gang!

Is it really the last month of the year already? Seems like this year flew by in a mad flood of book buying for us!

If you're looking for some great Christmas gift ideas, we've got a few suggestions:
  • Come into the store!
  • If you can't visit in person, check out our online stock at http://www.iliadbooks.com/shop/
  • Grab one of the last of our 2018 t-shirts!
  • Pick up an Iliad Bookshop gift certificate in any amount (sorry, we're not enabled to sell these online, but if you call us at 818-509-2665 we're happy to sell one over the phone and either ship it or hold it in the store).
We'll be closed on Christmas and New Year's Day, and we'll close at 4 p.m. on the 24th and the 31st; also, we won't be buying from the 22nd to the 24th. All other hours remain the same.

Hope your holidays are happy and full of great literature.

BLOGGING ABOUT...
I'm betting that a lot of you reading this are (just like me) fans of David Lynch's film and television work. You probably love Eraserhead, or Blue Velvet, or The Elephant Man, or Mulholland Drive, or some iteration of Twin Peaks. You're not even the only one who loves his film adaptation of Dune.

But what you may not be aware of is how many books of Lynch's fine art are out there.

It's common knowledge that Lynch started as a painter (the early chapters in his recent autobiography Room to Dream discuss this part of his life in detail), and that he came to film-making via other art projects. He has continued to paint and take photos for the last 40 years, and many books now exist that feature his art and photography.

Here are just a few that we currently have in stock at the Iliad:

Dreams - A Tribute to Fellini - Fine trade paperback, published by Fondacion Fellini in 2018. Artwork by Lynch in honor of Federico Fellini. $100

DIstorted Nudes - Very good trade paperback published by Absurda in 2004. Minor wear to wraps. This is Lynch the photographer exploring the possibilities of using software to alter photographs. $75

David Lynch - Dark Splendor - This gorgeous hardback explores all of Lynch's artistic pursuit, with images of art, film, and photography. Still sealed in the original shrink wrap. $100

WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?
Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, published by Doubleday & Co. in 1979. Hardback in very good condition with very good dust jacket. Signed and inscribed by Butler; an early printing but not a first; DJ has light sunning, rubbing, and edge wear; corners and spine ends slightly bumped, light foxing. $500

BOOK NEWS
We've been saying this for ages, but now the media seem to be coming around:

Independent bookstores are coming back. In fact, one recent article at CBSNews claims they're "booming".

"Bookstores are back and they're back in a big way," says the owner of three indie bookstores.
