An incompetent history teacher killed American history for me in high school. For years I avoided reading anything related to US History. I snapped out this absurd habit a thoughtful reader recommended a remarkable book on the origins of the Civil War by Adam Goodheart
The NY Times book review referred to 1861 as "creating the uncanny illusion that the reader has stepped into a time machine". I can't think of a better way to describe this extraordinary history book. Mr. Goodheart weaves together a tapestry of peoples' lives that filled my imagination for weeks. No other book has given me more insight into what people actually thought and felt just before the Civil War. And given the political polarity we see in our country today, 1861 is even more prescient as it explains exactly the result of absolutist thinking - death and destruction.
1861 woke me up to the fact that American history is remarkable. I've been reading deeply in the history of every era since. I highly recommend this book as the single most essential book to read about the Civil War.

We just bought a stellar collection of books on the history of California and Los Angeles. These amazing volumes reveal what our city and state were like in the past - did you know, for instance, that L.A. once had a yearly Fiesta in April? Or that San Bernardino County was once north of Victorville?
We've got some true rarities here, like:
- A 1924 report on L.A.'s water supply prepared by Chief Engineer William Mulholland
- A 1910 sales brochure on lots in a Laurel Canyon development called "Bungalow Land"
- An 1895 program for the above-mentioned Fiesta
Take a look at these stunning items.

Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...

Here in the U.S., the Saturday after Black Friday is now known as "Small Business Saturday". On that day (November 25th), consumers are encouraged to shop at independent businesses. Credit card companies sometimes offer rebates for customers who buy from small businesses on that day, and stores cross-promote. And it works: on 2016's Small Business Saturday, 112 million shoppers spent $15.4 billion at small businesses.
However, they do things a little differently across the Pond. In the U.K. (where there's no Thanksgiving in November, after all), they call that same Saturday "Sanctuary Saturday", and they celebrate the idea of bookstores providing a peaceful shopping experience.
While we're not sure we have the time or skills to provide "hand massages" to our customers (as suggested by Meryl Halls, the head of membership services for the Booksellers Association of the U.K. and Ireland (BA) ), we like the idea of "Sanctuary Saturday" and always aim to give you a little dose of literary serenity.
in 2016, 87 new ABA member bookstores opened for business in 32 states and the District of Columbia. That is almost a 43 percent increase over the number of store openings in 2015.
