Speaking of Halloween leftovers...we still have our sensational new shirts! However, there are only a few remaining (sorry - only sizes L and XL are left), with no plans at this point to re-order, so we advise you to order now.

Enjoy your Dia de los Muertos on November 2nd, and here's to a great rest of the month.

THIS MONTH'S STAFF PICK
A lot of other graphic novelists - Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Robert Kirkman - may be better known than Daniel Clowes, but we think he's as good as anyone in the field. He's never really dabbled in superheroes or been part of either the Marvel or DC Universes, but he's had three feature films produced from his work (especially the excellent Ghost World, which starred a young Scarlet Johansson).

Clowes's work features a clean style that excels in capturing quirky characters and moods. He's equally gifted as both an artist and a writer, which is probably why he's been tapped for movies three times.

His stories range relatively down-to-earth (like Ghost World) to downright surreal (Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron, a title he took from the classic Russ Meyer film Faster, Pussycat, Kill Kill), from full-length books to short pieces (we especially like the collection Caricature). He also produced his own magazine, Eightball, which ended its 23-issue run in 2004 (and has been reprinted since in collections).

We usually have plenty of Daniel Clowes on our shelves, ranging from paperbacks for $10 or less to signed and limited hardbacks (right now we have a nice signed & limited edition of Pussey! for $75).

BLOGGING ABOUT...
Last month we posted here about filming at the Iliad, and then (coincidentally) had one of our busiest months ever for filming here. Our regulars know that we had to close for two entire days (separated by a week) to accommodate two different shoots (Jane the Virgin and Nobodies).

Because these were both large-scale productions, they not only blocked off parking and streets, they also moved around parts of the store and even added onto some of our existing fixtures. Sometimes we love what they do and they allow us to keep the changes. The lovely decorated blue arch around the entry to our second room? Left over from a production. Jane the Virgin set up planters (and their own murals) outside our front door, as well as shelves (not shown in the photo below) for the free books. Although they took the shelves when they left, we like that idea! What do you think?

WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?
Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
We don't see much collectible Thomas Pynchon come in, so it was a thrill to recently acquire first editions of both V and Gravity's Rainbow. Gravity's Rainbow was published by Viking Press in 1973, and this is a very good copy in very good jacket, with minor sunning and edge wear to DJ, binding corners slightly bumped, small ink note to front free endpaper, light foxing to fore-edge,a nd a few pages have slightly bent corners. $350

BOOK NEWS
We've got some great news this month for many of our customers: California's odious "autograph law" - which required Certificates of Authenticity to accompany all signed items valued at five dollars or more - has been rescinded!

San Diego Assemblymember Todd Gloria led the charge with AB Bill 228, which not only exempts signed books from the law, but which took effect as of October 12th!

Why is this good news for many of you? Because it means we can buy your signed books again. The former bill made it so difficult to sell any signed material that many secondhand stores like us had to stop buying signed books, while many new bookstores had to stop holding author signings.

Thanks to all of you who may have added your voice to the various petitions and protests - we were victorious!
in 2016, 87 new ABA member bookstores opened for business in 32 states and the District of Columbia. That is almost a 43 percent increase over the number of store openings in 2015.
