Hi Gang!

Hope you're surviving the summer heat...but hey, it's still better than last summer, when July 6th hit 117 degrees, right?

After taking July off from buying so we could catch up, we are buying again in August. Just a few reminders: if you have more than three bags/boxes or anything rare/collectible, please call first at 818-509-2665 so we can schedule a time for you; we don't pay cash for books on weekends; and you can always check our selling guide for other questions. And we'd like to ask one favor if you're bringing in books to sell: please don't bring in moldy boxes that are covered in inches of dust - our sinuses can only take so much! Thanks.

WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?
Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
Happy Birthday to You! by Dr. Seuss, first edition published by Random House in 1959. Hardcover in good condition with good jacket. This is the first state, with 295/295 on front jacket flap, 6 white dots on bottom of page that begins with "Today is your birthday! You get what you wish!", and back flap lists Yertle the Turtle and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back; DJ has has some sunning, rubbing and edge wear with 1/4" chips at corners; light sunning and edge wear to binding, corners and spine ends are bumped, previous owner's inscription on front free endpaper, rear hinge is tearing. $300
