Hi Gang!

Once again, the buying has turned up to an 11 and we've been overwhelmed, so we're taking July off from buying/trading. We'll be happy to look at all your books again in August; in the meantime, we'll be working through all of the stock in storage and putting out great new books every day, so come on in!

Hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July (we'll be closed in observance of the holiday). Keep reading!

WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?
Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
Eight or Nine Wise Words About Letter-Writing (with The Wonderland Postage-Stamp Case) by Lewis Carroll, first edition published by Emberlin and Son in 1890. "Eight or Nine Words... " is a 48mo booklet of 40 pages with very minor soiling to wraps; "Postage-Stamp Case" is about the same size, very good plus in very good inner envelope (minor staining to one corner), in fair outer envelope (edges very worn). $250

BOOK NEWS
Once upon a time, counterfeit copies of books were oddities that usually came out of China or Taiwan, and now may be very collectible (like the two volumes of uncollected J. D. Salinger short stories).

Then Amazon came along.

Now counterfeit books are everywhere. Print-on-demand technologies have made it easy for unethical sellers to copy and sell both public-domain classics and modern bestsellers. "Summaries" of bestsellers are positioned on Amazons pages to fool customers into buying what they think is the actual book.

Amazon's answers to these issues is...well, lax, claiming both that this rarely happens and that they've denied accounts to over one million "bad actors".

We've seen these counterfeits come in to the Iliad. It's a real problem. Here's hoping Amazon will shore up their policies so authors don't continue to lose out on sales thanks to counterfeiting.
