Iliad Bookshop's June 2020 Newsletter (#41)

Hi All:

Given the events of the past week, we hope this announcement will come as a small piece good news in the midst of our multiple national (and local) heartaches...
The Iliad will be re-opening to in-store shopping tomorrow, Tuesday, June 2nd.

While we couldn't be happier to welcome you all back into the store, we do have to ask that you observe a few simple rules that the City of Los Angeles has mandated as part of the COVID-19 protocol for retail shops:
  • Face masks or coverings are REQUIRED to enter the store. Masks/coverings must completely cover your nose and mouth, and must be worn at all times while in the store.
  • Please maintain social distancing (six feet from other customers and the staff) while in the store.
  • No more than 25 customers at a time allowed in the store. If we are at 25 already in the store, we will ask customers to queue outside (at six feet apart).
We will be doing our part to keep all of us healthy, including providing hand sanitizer and gloves to those who request them, cleaning our credit card terminals and pens between each use, and frequently disinfecting of our counter surfaces and door knobs.

We're also still happy to provide mail order or curbside pickup. Please call us at 818-509-2665 or e-mail us if you're looking for something, and we'll tell you what we've got. We can e-mail photos or more information. If you have a large list, please give us a day or two to work through it (we've been swamped with lists over the last week).

We've also listed about 12,000 books at our website. As a reminder: that's only a fraction of what we've got, so you can always e-mail us your requests if you don't see what you want at the website.

Also, many of you have asked when we'll be buying again. At this point sorry to say we just don't know...but we still have 300 boxes of stock we've had in storage that we'll be putting out, so new books will still be cycling through.

We also want to apologize in advance for the fact that we're still in the middle of remodeling, and there's a chance that your favorite section is still packed away as it gets moved. We think you're all going to like the new look of the store, though! The front sales counter and buying counter are now conveniently located at the door to the parking lot, and we'll soon have a new Rare Book Room with all the books fully displayed in a comfortable, browse-able setting.

One final note: the pandemic has hit us as hard as it has most other small retail businesses, so much of our staff is still furloughed. Don't panic if your favorite Iliad crewmember doesn't answer the phone when you call! We hope to have the whole family together again before the year ends.

Thank you again for your continuing support through this craziest of times; we believe in the power of the written word, and we value all of you who share that belief. Stay well.
Dan, Lisa, Poul, Zeus and Apollo
Although we hope to return to our old hours at some point, please note our current hours:

As we've been going through our stock while moving the store about, we've come across so many incredible books we want to share, so we've started blogging about a few of our favorites. Click here to read about hand-painted movie posters from Ghana and the astonishing art of Tim Burton, with more to come...
We've been listing a few fun items on ebay recently. Check out our auctions for things like a signed David Bowie book, the legendary Cinefex magazine featuring the making of Blade Runner, and more.

Zeus misses all his customer friends so much that he's been driving the Iliad staff a little crazy lately - he just won't leave us alone!
We'd love to include your photos in our newsletter! Feel free to send to , let us know that it's okay to use the photo, and we'll include it in a future newsletter.

If you need more photos/videos of Zeus and Apollo, or any of Iliad's past felines, please visit our Pet Gallery.
