Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
The Mysterious Island II. Abandoned by Jules Verne.  American first edition, illustrated, published by Scribner, Armstrong & Co. in 1875. Verne's classic follow-up to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was originally published in English in three volumes; this is the second volume in that set. Our copy is in only good condition and we don't have volumes I and III, but still a desirable book!

Remember a few newsletters back when we talked here about the onerous California bill AB 1570, that requires a Certificate of Authenticity for any signed item valued at more than $5.00?

Well, now a bookseller in Northern California has joined forces with the Pacific Legal Foundation to challenge this law on the basis of First Amendment violation. Attorney Anastasia Boden explains: "The autograph law violates basic notions of free speech. Author events are vital to the free exchange of ideas.  They are places where people can go to be exposed to new ideas, debate with authors, and interact with other consumers.  But the new law deters, if not effectively bans, these events.” The bookstore, Book Passage, and the Pacific Legal Foundation are filing a constitutional lawsuit against California's state attorney general.

It's going to be interesting to follow this one through the courts! We'll let you know if we hear more about Book Passage v. Becerra.
