Hi Gang!

If you've been to the store recently, you may have noticed a rather (ahem) significant change to the front entrance...as in, it's not there anymore.

What happened: the city suddenly decided that the 64-year-old front steps infringed on their property. Fixing that entrance would've involved moving the entire front area of the building, so instead we jackhammered the steps out and closed that entrance permanently. The good news is that we'll soon start building a new sales counter near the back entrance, and will also begin work on a separate buying counter (something we've long wanted and needed!).

After taking the month of April off from buying, we have resumed looking at books for cash or credit. Please remember to call us at 818-509-2665 if you have more than 3 bags and/or boxes, or anything potentially very valuable. You can view our complete guide to selling your books here.

Whether selling or buying, we hope to see you soon.

WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?
Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, signed and limited hardback published by Random House in 1965. Signed by Capote and numbered 173/500, in slipcase. In fine condition, without dust jacket, as issued. A beautiful and very rare copy of an important book. $2,000

BOOK NEWS
Have you heard of the Espresso Book Machine (EBM)? It's essentially a self-contained all-in-one print shop that can produce a bound paperback book within minutes. The idea is that the EBM can make you a hard copy of any digitally-available book, in about ten minutes.

According to EBM's own website, there aren't that many of these machine out there...but the stores that have them have recently made innovative use of them: New York City’s Shakespeare & Co. and Cambridge, Mass.-based Harvard Book Store used their EBMs to print and sell hard copies of the Mueller Report.

Viva technology!
