Iliad Bookshop's April 2023 Newsletter (#75)
Hi Gang!

Woohoo - our new glass door is finally in place, and we love it! It has push-button handicapped access and a pull-down metal shutter for night-time security, but best of all is the way it lights up the whole entrance area of the store. And yes, the cats like it a lot - maybe too much - but they're learning quickly to not sit right in front of it. We're so glad we were able (with the help of everyone who donated money or books to us) to not just replace the old doors damaged in the fire last November but actually upgrade.

We're currently in the process of upgrading our security by installing bright lights along our Chandler and Cahuenga sides (we already put them in the parking lot area). The new lights are actually energy-saving and low-wattage but incredibly bright.

Next up: our mural artist will be flying in soon from the UK to touch up the parts of the mural damaged in the fire, and will maybe even add a few more author portraits... We'll also be repairing the rain gutters that were damaged in the fire.

Our last piece of news: we've had a shift in our staff! Eric has moved on (and we wish him well in his new career path), but please join us in welcoming Matt to the Iliad team.

We hope you're staying healthy, happy, dry and warm.

Dan, Lisa, Poul, Matt, and Sean (and Zeus and Apollo)

WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?
Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
The Holy Bible (The Illustrated Explanatory Family Bible) with material by Rev. Washington B. Erben, Rev. Alfred Nevin, and Rev. Clement M. Butler. Large hardback published by Alphonso Richardson in 1880.  Condition is good. This is a large family Bible with heavily tooled and gilt binding and two hinged clasps on fore-edge; also includes color title page, color maps, engravings (including 7 by Gustave Dore), and family photos in photo pages bound in at end; some wear to binding, hinges have been repaired, previous owner's name written on front free endpaper, light soiling and smudging to some pages. $860
