Hi Gang!

Well, we were hoping for a 2023 that would get off to a better start than 2022, but it didn't quite play out that way...on January 8, 60% of the staff tested positive for Covid, one had a negative test but the same symptoms, and the one who was negative and healthy had a scheduled vacation, which left us with a staff of zero for a week and a half. If you came by during that week (or half of the next), you know we were closed.

The good news is we've all tested negative now and the store is back to relatively normal. We're also making progress on the post-arson repairs, with new lighting in the parking lot and the new entrance doors scheduled to arrive and be installed soon.

We hope you've been staying healthy (at least healthier than us!) and sane so far in 2023.

WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?
Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
Martha's Vineyard and Other Places by David Hockney. Two-volume set published by Thames & Hudson in 1985. First volume is halfbound in dark blue leather, reproduces Hockney's complete original sketchbook down to blank and torn-out pages; includes separate paperback of text; both in slipcase; Hockney has flat-signed (in two colors) each book and the case. Condition is very good: light sunning to paperback and to slipcase, case also has some soiling and wear to edges and foot. $250
