Iliad Bookshop's February 2022 Newsletter (#61)

Hi Gang!

Those of you who follow us on Facebook have already heard this news, but for the rest: we're very sorry to report the passing (on January 24) of longtime Iliad employee Bob Johnson. Bob had suffered heart problems for several years that had prevented him from returning to work; he finally had a massive coronary event. His wit and kindness will be sorely missed by all who knew him. If you'd like to know more about Bob or contribute a story or photo, we've set up a page at the Iliad Bookshop website to celebrate him: Remembering Bob Johnson . Thank you to all of you who've already offered condolences or help.

Beyond that, there's not much news to report. As a reminder: we aren't yet buying or taking books for credit, but we are accepting donations.

Also: face coverings are required inside the store.

Stay healthy, and we hope to see you soon.

WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?
Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
The Rolling Stones Tour of the Americas 1975: The Diary, Photographs and Memorabilia of Christopher Simon Sykes by Christopher Simon Sykes. Limited edition published by Genesis Publications in 2005. Quarterbound in leather without jacket, as issued. Numbered 676/2500, signed by Sykes and Tour Manager Peter Rudge, in clamshell case, includes 'room keys' and set of tour passes, also includes custom cloth bag and original shipping carton. Condition is near fine. $1,000

PODCASTS
No, Iliad's not doing its own podcast (at least not yet!), but we've recently learned of some cool new literary podcasts that we wanted to share.

First off, many of you probably remember Ricky, who worked at the Iliad for more than twenty years before retiring in March 2020. Ricky's staying busy with (among other things) podcasting, and his newest show is all about vintage paperbacks. You can catch the first episode of The Paperback Show by clicking here.

Next, we've got one that will be launching soon and promises to be great...

Always Authors is a podcast that features candid conversations between two authors, starting with their work, lives, and favorite books, then continuing down whatever surprising paths their conversation takes them.

It’s different from other literary podcasts because there are never hosts or academic interviewers; it’s one author who chooses another author they’d love to chat with.

Always Authors features a diverse array of authors representing the broadest spectrum of literary genres.

Click here to sign up to get the latest updates about when the podcast launches and who their first guests will be! This will be a great opportunity to hear about new authors and works that will make perfect additions to your reading list.

ZEUS AND APOLLO
Zeus helps customer Garrett Biggs decide whether or not to purchase Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World (thanks to Melissa Sublette for the photo).
Bonus pic: here's a photo of former store cat Henrietta, who went home to live with Bob in 2013; this photo was taken about three weeks before Bob passed. Henrietta is now settling into life with her new human, Iliad's own Lisa.
We'd love to include your photos in our newsletter! Feel free to send to info@iliadbooks.com , let us know that it's okay to use the photo, and we'll include it in a future newsletter.

If you need more photos/videos of Zeus and Apollo, or any of Iliad's past felines, please visit our Pet Gallery.
