Hi Gang!

Pant pant pant...that was one rollicking Christmas season! Thank you so much to everyone who supported us over both the last month and the last year.

As most of you know, 2022 was a rough year for the Iliad, what with the passing of two staff members (Bob and Brett), the arson attempt, the ongoing pandemic, and various acts of vandalism and theft (our pipes outside were repeatedly stolen). But because of our customer base (YOU, in other words) we're able to continue and even make a few improvements. You'll soon see beautiful glass entrance doors, better parking lot lighting and security, and maybe a few other surprises.

Here's to a better, healthier, happier 2023 for all of us!

WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?
Have you ever noticed the big safe full of books behind Iliad's front counter? We get asked about it frequently. "Is it really old?" is a common question (the answer: no, we bought it new just a few years ago). But most customers want to know what kind of books merit storage in a safe (we think of these as the rarest of our rare books), so in this column we'll pick one book every month and tell you about it. This month's book is...
Recueil D'Antiquites Egyptiennes, Etrusques, Grecques et Romaines by
Anne Claude Philippe de Pestels de Lévis de Tubières-Grimoard de Caylus (Comte De Caylus). Published by  Chez Desaint & Saillant in 1752. Condition is good: Bound in full brown morocco with ribbed bands and titles on spine, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, includes all plates and illustrations; leather is heavily worn, corners worn and rounded, hinges cracking, foxing throughout, previous owner's name and small inscription written on verso of rear free endpaper. $500
